Agave is a desert succulent plant that is very sacred to me. It has offered me the opportunity to explore Didjeridu crafting in a unique context. I have learned a lot about what it takes to transform my idea of a "good" playing Didjeridu by working with this plant. I genuinely attempt tp apply this knowledge to every Agave Didjeridu I craft. I carefully harvest the spent flower stalks of the Agave in the mountains of Arizona. I consiously select the appropriate stalk, depending on the size, age and if it feels right. I harvest about about 3-4 times a year. It is a very important and spiritual time for me. When I first started making Agave Didjeridus, it took a lot of experimenting to come up with a way to hollow the instrument in a way that worked well for me. I wanted to avoid "splitting" the Agave because it didn't seem necessary. Some of the tools I use I had to make, because of the unique methods of hollowing the Agave. I hollow and shape the inside of the Didjeridu with long chisels, drill bits, extensions and fire. I sand the inside and outside of the instrument to make sure it is smooth and that the wood is presented well. Tuning the Didjeridu is a very important step. I focus on tuning the fundamental drone to the desired note. The mouthpiece is a key element to the Didjeridus I make. They stand out in appearance with there unique qualities but also serve as a key ingredient to tuning the instrument. All the Agave Didjeridus are finished inside and out with a high quality resin. The cured finish is non toxic and totally waterproof. The photos displayed are examples of Agave Didjeridus I've crafted. Notice the unique wooden mouthpieces and quality craftsmanship. You'll also notice some have a top end that is solid hardwood and bottom end of Agave. A selected variety of different woods vertically laminated. I call these the "hybrids". they produce a very powerful and unique tone because of the combination of hardwood and Agave. My specialty I like to say. If you're interested in purchasing a Didjeridu, ordering a custom Didjeridu or have any questions, please e-mail me. These Didjeridus are very limited so what I have available varies. Thank you! | ||
